STDs were understood as a punishment form for sexual behaviour in many societies. Even today it is possible to observe negative attitudes that affect the lives and the sex lives of affected or infected people with STDs and HIV/AIDS. This study aims to investigate a possible relationship between the time of diagnosis of HIV/ AIDS and a sense of  sexual self-efficacy in heterosexual men. To this end, we examined 17 men enrolled in a specialized STD/AIDS health system in Sao Paulo, assumed to be heterosexual, with no sexual complaints, and all of them responded to the selfesteem scale. The figures show that individuals who have been diagnosed for at least 6 months scored 72.80. The ones diagnosed for 2 years scored 61.46. Those with more than 5 years of diagnosis scored 50.32 and individuals who were diagnosed for over 10 years scored 61.20. According to the scale’s validating study, scores below 60 indicate sexual problems which affect self-efficacy. While 0.5% is not a significant  difference, we might consider that in the long-term the diagnosis of a disease such as HIV, because of prejudice  and stigma, will affect the individual’s perception when it comes to their sexual performance. It can affect their sexual frequency among other possible problems. This can increase the punitive nature of the individual’s former sexual behaviour, which may justify their sexual difficulties and limit their search for treatment.
